As we celebrate World Elephant Day today, it is critical to discuss the importance of protecting these charismatic beasts and the possible conservation efforts to ensure the future generations are as lucky as us to witness their grand presence in the wild!

‘Cinnamon Elephant Project’ - a collaborative effort between Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts and the Centre for Conservation and Research is a groundbreaking initiative to develop best practices in elephant tourism.

This initiative has sponsored satellite radio collars, which were successfully placed on elephants in the wild. This data is being collated by Sri Lanka’s best known Elephant scientist Dr. Pruthu Fernando enabling the availability of data for Government to mitigate the Elephant-Human conflict in the North-Central province of Sri Lanka.

In addition, the project also aims at identifying elephants based on their morphological characteristics and their life stories, followed by our naturalists at Cinnamon Nature Trails. This information is shared with visitors on safari and in-house guests at Cinnamon Lodge Habarana, through a newly constructed elephant research station. This station empowers visitors with the right data to have an in-depth understanding and enriched safari experience!

As a responsible corporate citizen, we believe it is our duty to do our part in conserving our biodiversity. Hold hands with us to spread awareness this World Elephant Day!
